Meet Helen Chang! Helen has joined us in November 2021 and immediately jumped in to help. She is eager to take initiative and proactive in identifying what she could help with at our events. We are grateful to have her on our team.
Q: When did you get involved with Wealth by Health?
A: I started volunteering with Wealth by Health in November of 2021.
Q: Why do you choose to volunteer?
A: Volunteering, especially with underserved communities like the ones Wealth by Health serves, broadens my perspective and worldview. As a result, I am better informed culturally, socially, and spiritually when I interact with others.
Q: What attracted you to Wealth by Health’s cause?
A: I was impressed by Wealth by Health's humble origin as a mobile clinic helping elderly patients at a local temple. The organization's goal to promote self-sufficiency by empowering individuals from marginalized groups, including houseless individuals, immigrants, foster children, minorities, and women, to find solutions to real world issues through literacy in areas of health, taxation, law, immigration, community safety, and business management resonate strongly with my own values to give these populations the tools they need to thrive on their own.
Q: What has been your favorite event and why?
A: The pediatric vaccine clinics at La Cañada in January and February were most memorable for me not only because I loved getting to talk with the kids while filling out their vaccine cards, but also many of the parents expressed their thanks, which made the experience rewarding. Recognizing some of the kids who showed up to both clinics for their vaccines was also great because although some were timid or scared the first time, they looked much more comfortable and relaxed when they came for their second doses."
Q: What makes this volunteer experience a meaningful use of your time?
A: I look forward to volunteering at Wealth by Health's clinics each week because I get to meet and interact with members of the community who come as patients, and I love working with the other volunteers and staff who help run Wealth by Health's operations. There is a strong sense of unity among the volunteers, staff, and patients that makes volunteering with Wealth by Health enjoyable.
Q: What do you enjoy doing when you are not volunteering?
A: When I am not volunteering, I enjoy eating good food with family and friends.
Q: What is your favorite quote or life motto?
A: "Change doesn't happen overnight." I like the idea that growth takes time and it's okay to take the time needed to become the best versions of ourselves.
