Volunteer Spotlight - Carolyn Ho

Meet Carolyn Ho! Carolyn has been with us since 2019- taking on different roles at our clinics and now a part of the administration team as our Program Manager.

Q: Why do you choose to volunteer?

A: I've always been passionate about volunteering. I feel I have been fortunate with the resources, information and education I have and want to use that to give back to the community. Not only do I personally feel a sense of happiness but also feel elated to help out the community.

Q: What attracted you to Wealth by Health’s cause?

A: I whole heartedly agreed and connected with WBH's mission statement. When I was younger, I had difficulty seeing a medical specialist that couldn't be managed by my PCP. Fortunately, my aunt advocated and assisted me in finding the right specialist. With that, I understand the hardship to access medical resource and it inspired me to help others get the resources they need. I want to help bridge the gap between people in accessing medical resources to improve their health and lives; I want to meet clients where they are at.

Q: What has been your favorite event and why?

A: My favorite events are the COVID vaccine clinics. One memorable moment was when I was registering a patient and she thanked us for holding this free vaccine clinic. She also shared her father was a research scientist who unfortunately passed away from COVID and would have gotten the vaccine if he was still alive. She proudly said she was glad to get vaccinated as COVID infection can be prevented or symptoms can be minimized. I thanked her for taking the step to not only protect herself but also protect the community. I was also moved when seeing children ages 5-11 year olds get vaccinated when it was first approved last November 2021. When I asked how they felt to get the vaccine, they said they were excited and not scared because they would be able to hang out with their friends. Knowing children tend to speak candidly, I was amazed at how they spoke up for themselves; it showed how smart and considerate these young kids are to help the community.

Q: What makes this volunteer experience a meaningful use of your time? A: Besides connecting the community to available resources, I enjoy helping the community on the ground and seeing first hand the difference we make in real time. I like interacting and speaking with patients in order to understand their history and stories. It gives me insight on how our actions make an impact on their lives - big or small. I also love seeing how this amazing organization has grown since I first volunteered and seeing the volunteers all work together to achieve one goal.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you are not volunteering?

A: I hang out with my family, cook, eat out, and watch movies. I also enjoy walking my dog at the park and playing tennis. I also volunteer with another organization that prepares high school students for internships opportunities through job readiness.

Q: What is your favorite quote or life motto?

A: 1) You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. Wayne Gretzky.

2) The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in service of others. Mahatma Gandhi.
